Firebird Pizza, My New Favorite Place

When my daughter was in driving school a few years ago, I would often take her to the classroom in a strip mall on South Garfield. This was before construction made traveling south past M-72 (I live on Leelanau) a painful proposition, and one could simply deal with the normal tourist season traffic and the ever-present scourge of slow-moving Subarus.

In the strip mall next to that strip mall were the remains of a party store, Eastfield Liquor, which I never had the privilege of visiting. Sad, I know. By the time I was regularly visiting that area of Garfield, the party store was gone, and construction had begun on a pizza place. I'm always happy to see the birth of a new restaurant.

What eventually came was Firebird Pizza. It's a unique setup, right next door to Steve's Smokin' BBQ which, by the way, we used for my daughter's open house party, and it was a big hit. We still have some in our freezer. It's two restaurants sharing one door. Like a mini-food court, but with better food. As I had obviously eaten at Steve's before, liking it enough to win the five-way race to supply BBQ for the Open House party, I decided on Firebird.

What a magnificent set up. You can choose your crust, sauce, cheese, meats, veggies, and drizzles / extras. And if you are gluten-free person, they have you covered. And the toppings are unlimited. Yes, an unlimited amount. Want ten toppings? Go for it. That sounds like a terrible idea to me, but knock yourself out. I went with pepperoni, bacon, red onions and green olives. It was a great choice.

Such a great meal. For $13.99, you get a super bunch of excellent pizza. And it only took a few minutes. After the M-22 / M-72 construction ends in November, I plan on making Firebird a regular lunch stop.
